UTPA BroncBusters - Ashley Perez

Oct. 11, 2006

1. How difficult is it to prepare for three consecutive seasons (cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field) in a single year?
AP: You break it up into seasons. You train for cross country in summer, indoor in December and continue with outdoor training.

2. How do you feel that you have transformed as a person and athlete from your freshman year to your senior year?
AP: My work ethic because I try harder. My sophomore year wasn't that good because I didn't run as hard so I push myself more.

3. How did you manage to be on the road most of fall and spring seasons and still be able to maintain a grade point average that is close to a 4.0?
AP: Study whenever I have time off. You can't really study on the bus because people are watching movies and you can't really concentrate then when we fly it's just an hour flight.

4. How mentally focused must you be in order to run long distance? Is it the most mentally demanding of the three seasons?
AP: You must be really focused, but they are all the same. You have to be prepared, and you break down the distance and take each one at a time.

5. Besides running, do you do anything to help keep your body healthy?
AP: I lift weights, and I "try" to eat healthy.

6. In your family history, is there anyone in particular that might have passed on the running gene onto you?
AP: Some distance guy relative of mine.

7. Do you have a special technique for when the race starts and then progresses? How do you pace yourself?
AP: I have a lot of trouble in the beginning. It takes my body time to warm up so I have to push it during the first mile.

8. What are your goals heading into your final season of cross country?
AP: My goal is to help us become the best team that we can be.

9. What's the one thing about cross country that the normal everyday person couldn't understand?
AP: The miles!!!

10. Who has been a major impact on your life?
AP: My high school coach because he started me running. I wasn't going to run my freshman year, but he convinced me.

1. What was the first job you ever held?
AP: I've never had one... running is my job.

2. What is your first thought when you wake up in the morning?
AP: It's early in the morning, and I want to go back to sleep.

AP: On Sundays after our meets
