Sept. 16, 2006
The UTPA women's volleyball team dropped its second and finale match of the Molten Invitational as the Lady Broncs failed to get revenge to an earlier season setback to the University of Portland on Saturday (Sept. 16).
The Pilots took advantage of a poor offensive performance by the Lady Broncs as they captured a 30-21, 30-20 and 30-25 decision over the Valley's squad. The setback for the Lady Broncs was their three straight contests, including their second setback to the Pilots in a span of six days.
Maria Clemens posted a double-double (kills-assists) with a 10-kill, 22-dig performance while Kara Pein collected 33 assists and 10 digs for the Pilots. Jennifer Sheedy added 10 kills for Portland, and Murphy McClenahan notched 16 digs.
Sophomore Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) led the Lady Broncs with 10 kills, and Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) posted a double-double (assists-digs) following a 14-assist, 11-dig performance against the Pilots.
Phillips was the lone Lady Bronc to be represented on the Molten Invitational All-Tournament squad as she was the top offensive threat for UTPA in its pair of matches.
Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) finished with a team-high 19 digs, and Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) posted seven kills and six digs for the Lady Broncs.
The Lady Broncs dropped their record to 2-10 on the season, and the Pilots improved their record to 6-5 during the 2006 campaign.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Monday (Sept. 18) at the UTPA Fieldhouse against Texas A&M-Kingsville with match time slated for 7:00 p.m.
