UTPA vs. High Point - Box Score
The UTPA women's volleyball program posted a 1-1 record on the second day of action at the University of Portland Volleyball Tournament as the Lady Broncs handed a setback to High Point in the afternoon before falling to the host-team in the nightcap on Saturday (Sept. 10).
UTPA 3, High Point 2 (22-30, 30-28, 26-30, 30-14, 15-11)
In their first match of the tournament, the Lady Broncs dropped a five-set decision to Cornell University, but they were able to rally back on the second day of competition and take a five-set decision from High Point University.
The Lady Broncs had trouble getting things going in the first game of their match with High Point as they dropped a 30-22 set. Down 1-0 in the match, the Lady Broncs were able to pull out a critical game in the second frame by a close 30-28 score where there were nine lead changes and nine ties in the set.
With the score tied at 1-1, the Panthers took the third match by a 30-26 count, but were unable to sustain the lead as the Lady Broncs battled their way to victory after taking the final two frames by scores of 30-14 and 15-11.
UTPA senior Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) posted a match-high 22 kills to go along with a .409 hitting percentage as she committed only four miscues in 44 total attacks. She also added her second straight double-double (kills-digs) of the tournament with 14 digs for the Lady Broncs.
Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) had a huge performance for the Lady Broncs as she netted 10 kills to go along with a career-high 21 digs. Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) continued her standout season with another double-double (assists-digs) as she posted a match-high 50 assists and 12 digs.
The Lady Broncs notched 93 digs in the match compared to 80 for the Panthers and a large part of it was the defensive performances from Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) and Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.), who recorded 27 and 15 digs respectively.
Jamie Kaufman collected 12 kills and 14 digs to lead the Panthers, who fell to 0-4 on the season, and Kristina Taylor notched a team-high 34 assists.
Portland 3, UTPA 1 (30-21, 27-30, 30-12, 30-21)
In the nightcap, the Lady Broncs dropped their second match of the tournament as they were handed a 3-1 setback from the host-squad Pilots.
The Pilots and Lady Broncs were square after the first two sets with each taking a set a piece, but Portland pulled out a dominating 30-12 performance in the third set and carried that momentum over to the fourth set where they won by a 30-21 count.
Bravo concluded her stellar tournament with her third consecutive double-double with a 12-kill, 15-dig performance en route to earning All-Tournament laurels for the third time this season.
Blakely notched her third double-double of the tournament with a 39-assist, 16-dig performance while Phillips added 12 kills and eight digs for the Lady Broncs. Lyons was the defensive standout for the Lady Broncs as she finished with a team-high 18 digs in the match.
The Pilots were led by Nicole Thometz and Jennifer Sheedy, who each collected a team-high 15 digs in the match. Kara Pein notched 45 assists while Murphy McClenahan added a match-high 21 digs in the contest.
Portland improved its record to 5-4 on the season while the Lady Broncs dropped to 2-8 during the 2006 campaign.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Sept. 15th at the University of Nevada Tournament in Reno, NV.
