University of Texas-Pan American junior Stefanie Maynard (Pflugerville, TX/Pflugerville H.S.) captured her third consecutive National Minority College Golf Championship individual title on the North Course of the PGA Golf Club on Sunday (May 8) in Port St. Lucie, FL.
Maynard finished the three-round tournament, shooting a one-over 217 (73-73-71), which included a round-best 71 on the final day of competition. It was Maynard's fifth career title, which also includes a pair of UTPA Bronc Classic championships.
The Lady Broncs also won their third consecutive National Minority College Golf Championship team title, finishing with a total team score of 912 (306-307-299). UTPA was able to distance itself from runner-up Bethune-Cookman, who finished 37 strokes behind the defending champions at 987.
Nikki Boychuk (Conroe, TX/Willis H.S.) finished with runner-up honors for the second consecutive year as she wrapped up her three-day tournament with a score of 229 (74-76-79). Senior Crystal Frazier (Coolidge, TX/Wortham H.S.), who was playing in her last tournament as a Lady Bronc, was fourth overall after she fired a 231 (79-79-73), which included a 73 on the final set of 18 holes.
Daniela Cortes (Aguascalientes, Mexico/Colegio Portugal) was fifth overall as she notched a 236 (81-79-76), and Elizabeth Rodriguez (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood H.S.) was ninth as she put together a three-round score of 243 (80-84-79).
On the men's side, the Broncs were fifth overall in the nine-team tournament after finishing with a three-round total of 886 (301-299-286). The Broncs' 286 in the final round of competition was their best score of the season.
Craig Berger (Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada/Wetaskiwin Composite H.S.) was UTPA's top golfer as he recorded a career-best finish of sixth overall with a score of 211 (73-70-68). In round three, the Broncs' junior fired a 68, which was his lowest score since joining the squad.
Freshmen A.J. Hohn (Stockton, CA/Lodi H.S.) and Kyle Tudi (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral H.S.) tied for 18th overall after the pair shot an identical 225 over the three-day span. Jeff Hensley (Van Horn, TX/Van Horn H.S.) was 23rd after he finished with a 233 (75-86-72), and Colin Norris (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Cochrane H.S.) was 32nd with a score of 242 (80-78-84).
Tennessee State won the men's team title with a score of 840 while Johnson & Wales, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M and UTPA rounded out the top five.
