UTPA and Maynard in First Place after Day One

The University of Texas-Pan American women's golf team found themselves at the top of the leaderboard following the conclusion of the first round of the National Minority College Golf Championships in Port St. Lucie, FL, on Friday (May 6).

The Lady Broncs fired a team score of 306 after the first set of 18 holes and held a one-stroke lead over Bethune-Cookman while Tennessee State possesses third place at 364.

Junior Stefanie Maynard (Pflugerville, TX/Pflugerville H.S.), who is searching for her third consecutive NMGC individual championship, is in first place after shooting an opening round 73. Similar to a year ago, Nikki Boychuk (Conroe, TX/Willis H.S.) is close on her heels in second place after firing a 74 in the first round.

Crystal Frazier (Coolidge, TX/Wortham H.S.) finished in seventh place after shooting a 79 while Elizabeth Rodriguez (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood H.S.) was one-stroke back of her teammate at 80 and eighth place. Daniela Cortes (Aguasclientes, Mexico/Colegio Portugal) also finished in the top 10 as she was tied for ninth after shooting an 81.

On the men's side, Craig Berger (Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada/Wetaskiwin Composite H.S.) was the Broncs' top performer as he finished tied for 10th after the first round of action with a score of 73.

Kyle Tudi (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral H.S.) and Jeff Hensley (Van Horn, TX/Van Horn H.S.) both fired a 75, and A.J. Hohn (Stockton, CA/Lodi H.S.) concluded his first day of action with a 78. Colin Norris (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Cochrane H.S.) shot 80 after the first set of 18 holes.

The Broncs are currently tied for fifth place after finishing with a team score of 301, but are only a few shots back of Florida A&M and Johnson & Wales. Tennessee State is in first place after opening up the NMG Championships with a score of 286.

The second round of the National Minority College Golf Championships will begin on Saturday (May 6).
