UTPA Finishes 12th at "Mo"Morial Invitational

March 1, 2005

The University of Texas-Pan American women's golf team finished 12th with a team score of 986 (323-330-333) at the "Mo"Morial Invitational hosted by Texas A&M University on Tuesday (Mar. 1) in Bryant, TX.

Stefanie Maynard (Pflugerville, TX/Pflugerville H.S.) was the Lady Broncs top performer as the UTPA junior tied for 13th overall with a final three-round score of 237 (78-79-80). It was the fifth time this year and 13th overall that Maynard has finished in the top 15 of a tournament.

"I'm very proud of Stefanie," said head coach Barb Odale. "She had a little trouble towards the end of her round, but she never gave up and continued to fight."

Sophomore Elizabeth Rodriguez (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood H.S.) was tied for 42nd overall with a three-round total of 246 (79-85-82) while Nikki Boychuk (Conroe, TX/Willis H.S.) and Crystal Frazier (Coolidge, TX/Wortham H.S.) finished 63rd and 65th with scores of 254 (82-90-82) and 255 (84-82-89), respectively. Junior Daniela Cortes (Aguasclientes, Mexico/Colegio Portugal) was tied for 76th overall, shooting 263 (89-84-90) during the Invitational.

"Overall, I'm very proud of the girls. We didn't necessarily accomplish our goal of finishing in the top 10, but we were pretty close. We were able to finish ahead of Kansas, and any time you can beat a team from the Big 12, it's a feather in your cap. We proved to ourselves that we can play with the top teams in the country," Odale added.

Odale's alma mater, Southern Methodist, captured the Invitational crown with a final score of 942 while Texas A&M and Kent State were both one-stroke back of the Mustangs, finishing at the 943 mark. Texas Christian and Northwestern rounded out the top five.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action over spring break at the St. Croix Collegiate Classic held in the Virgin Islands on Mar. 11-13.

"This was a good start for us, and our girls are looking forward to our trip over spring break. We are familiar with the course and have high expectations when we are there," Odale concluded.
