Gray Earns Independent Newcomer of the Week Honors

Dec. 6, 2006

UTPA guard LeKeisha Gray (Muskogee, OK/Butler County C.C.) is the third Lady Bronc to be honored as Independent Newcomer of the Week Player through four weeks of play this season.

Over UTPA's three-game road trip in the final week of November, Gray averaged 12.3 points on 14-32 shooting (44 percent), including 5-13 (38 percent) from behind the arc. Through the three games, Gray averaged just 27 minutes per contest and scored 12 of the teams 16 first-half points against Big 12 foe Nebraska. Against the `Huskers, she finished with 16 points on 6-11 shooting and a solid 4-4 from the charity stripe, in 30 minutes of action.

On the season, Gray is averaging a team-high 10.7 points on 36-84 shooting from the field and a reliable 13-19 from the foul line while starting in eight games this season. As the floor general for the Lady Broncs, Gray leads the team in steals with 21, including four last week while boasting an assist/turnover ratio of 0.8 on the season.

The UTPA newcomer joins teammates Rose Esther Jean (Missouri City, TX/Hightower H.S.) and Aleeya Grigsby (Nacogdoches, TX/Nacogdoches H.S.) as recipients of Independent Newcomer of the Week honors this season. Lady Bronc players have earned the award three of the four weeks through the first month of the season.

Utah Valley State sophomore Sandy Marvin earned Player of the Week honors while averaging 23.5 points per game last week as the Wolverines defeated Boise State and Idaho State to improve to 7-1, which is the best start in school history. Marvin had 28 points on 6-10 shooting from the field and a perfect 13-13 from the foul line in a win over Boise State. She led her team to a comeback victory in overtime against Idaho State, finishing with 19 points on 7-13 shooting.

The Independent Player and Newcomer of the Week awards are voted on by Sports Information Directors at NCAA Division I Independent Institutions.
