UTPA freshman Aleeya Grigsby (Nacogdoches, TX/Nacogdoches H.S.) became the second player in as many weeks to be selected as the Independent Newcomer of the Week, which was announced on Wednesday (Nov. 29).
Grigsby was selected to the CenturyTel/Bobcat Classic All-Tournament Team at Texas State University where the UTPA forward averaged 12.5 points per game. The UTPA newcomer connected on 9-of-23 shot attempts, including 2-of-3 attempts from behind the three-point arc and 5-of-9 shots from the charity stripe.
Through three games this past week where the Lady Broncs recorded a 1-2 record, Grigsby averaged 11.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game with her best game coming against Sun Belt Conference-foe University of Louisiana-Monroe where she scored a career-high 17 points on to go along with seven rebounds, three steals and one assist at the CenturyTel/Bobcat Classic.
The Nacogdoches, TX, native finished with 10 points and five rebounds in UTPA's dominating 110-49 victory over Schreiner University at the UTPA Fieldhouse and collected eight points and nine rebounds against Texas State in the opening game of the CenturyTel/Bobcat Classic.
On the season, Grigsby is averaging 9.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while starting in all seven contests and averaging 25.4 minutes per evening.
Last week, Tamara Vaughn (Houston, TX/Blinn College) became the first player in UTPA women's basketball history to be selected as Independent Player of the Week while Rose Esther Jean (Missouri City, TX/Hightower H.S.) was awarded with Independent Newcomer of the Week laurels.
The Independent Player and Newcomer of the Week awards are voted on by Sports Information Directors at NCAA Division I Independent institutions.
