UTPA guard LeKeisha Gray (Muskogee, OK/Butler County C.C.) became the third multiple-award winner on the Lady Bronc's squad when she was honored as Independent Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season.
Gray led the Lady Broncs with 13.5 scoring average to go along with 5.5 rebounds and one steal per game in a 1-1 week for UTPA. The Lady Bronc newcomer finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including a trio of three-pointers, to go along with seven rebounds, two steals and one assist in a 54-48 victory over Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on Jan. 15. In one stretch, Gray scored 13 of the Lady Broncs' 17 points during a 17-3 scoring run during the first half of victory over the Islanders. She also finished with a team-high nine points on the road at Oral Roberts on Jan. 19.
On the season, Gray is the only Lady Bronc averaging in double figures with 10.4 points per game and leads the team in steals (38) and assists (46). The 5-4 guard is shooting 37.1 percent from the field on 76-of-205 on the season while averaging four rebounds per game, trailing forwards MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) who averages a team-high 6.1 rpg and Aleeya Grigsby (Nacogdoches, TX/Nacogdoches H.S.) with 4.1 rpg.
Gray joins Tamara Vaughn (Houston, TX/Blinn College) and Grigsby as a multiple award winner this season. Vaughn was honored as Independent Player of the Week in the opening week of the season and followed up that award by earning Independent Newcomer of the Week honors on Jan. 2nd. Grigsby became a two-time Independent Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 28th and Dec. 12th for her efforts on the hardwood.
The Independent Newcomer of the Week award is voted on by Sports Information Directors at NCAA Division I Independent Institutions.
