The Lady Bronc's late rally comes up short as they fell to Louisiana-Monroe in their second game at the CenturyTel Bobcat Classic hosted by Texas State on Saturday (Nov. 25) by a score of 55-51.
ULM would lead the game early, but an Aleeya Grigsby (Nacogdoches, TX/Nacogdoches H.S.) baseline jumper would spark a 5-0 run by UTPA to put the Lady Broncs up 7-5 with 15:13 remaining in the first half.
The Warhawk's Melanie Williams would then hit a three-point jumper to put ULM back on top, and would ignite a 12-2 run for her team to make the score 17-9 midway through the opening stanza.
UTPA was relentless as Grigsby would hit the front end of a one-and-one to reduce the lead to five, making the score 20-15 with 4:33 remaining in the first half. The outside shooting of April O'Neal would be the Warhawk's response, as the trey made it an eight-point lead by ULM.
The Lady Broncs would head to the intermission down by double digits, with the score at 30-19.
UTPA came back from the break, opening with a 6-2 run to get within seven, but Williams would hit a lay-up and a free throw off a steal to put ULM up by double digits at 10 with 17:14 left to play.
Grigsby would hit a three-pointer to spark a 7-0 run by the Lady Broncs to cut the lead to two points, making the score 37-35 with 14 minutes remaining in regulation.
A LeKeisha Gray (Muskogee, OK/Butler County C.C.) jumper would give UTPA its first lead of the game to make it 43-41, but an O'Neal lay-up would knot the game at 43.
A Tamara Vaughn (Houston, TX/Blinn College) trey would put the Lady Broncs up again, but ULM responded with another lay-up and a converted free throw from O'Neal to go up by two.
A three-point shot by Grigsby with one minute left tied the game 51-51, but on the next possession the Warhawk's would score again and not relinquish the lead.
Grigsby scored a game-high 17 points on the night while Vaughn scored 11 for the Lady Broncs. MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) would score her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
For her efforts in the two-game tournament, Grigsby was selected to the CenturyTel/Texas State Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The loss drops the Lady Broncs to 3-3 on the season as they take to the court again when they head to Lincoln, NE, to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Tuesday (Nov. 28) in game three of their six-game road trip.
