The University of Texas-Pan American men's and women's cross country teams collected 21st and 23rd place at the 19th annual Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Fayetteville, AR on Saturday (Oct. 13).
The Broncs posted a 21st place showing with a team time of 2:46:50.1. Leading the way for the Broncs was junior standout Luis Nava (La Joya, TX/La Joya H.S.) who finished 31st overall with a mark of 31:14:40.
J.J. Hernandez (San Juan, TX/PSJA North H.S.) collected 83rd place honors with a time of 32:29.90 while Edinburg native Roly Vela (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) placed 146th overall with a mark of 33:42:70, respectively.
Osvaldo Gonzalez crossed the end line with a time of 33:57.20 finishing 156th overall, Gilroy Martinez Jr. (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe H.S.) came in 197th place with a mark of 35:25.60 and Jorge Rodriguez (Hidalgo, TX/Valley View H.S.) finished 248th with a time of 38:59:80, respectively.
Shadrack Songok of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi captured the men's division while host University of Arkansas collected the 19th annual Chile Pepper Festival team title.
The Lady Broncs recorded a 23rd place showing out of 41 teams. Brownsville native Carolina Izaguirre (Brownsville, TX/Hanna H.S.) led the way as she finished 71st overall with a time of 22:37.9.
Sara Rodriguez (Pharr, TX/Valley View H.S.) crossed the finish line in 190th place with a mark of 23:31.50, Shardae Bey (Houston, TX/Elsik H.S.) finished 123rd overall with a time of 23:37.70 and Rose Escovedo (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) came in 169th place with a time of 24:38.50, respectively.
Newcomer Diana Gallaso (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) finished 657th with a mark of 24:44.80 and Sonya Rivera (Brownsville, TX/Hanna H.S.) crossed the end line in 849th place with a time of 25:06.1, respectively.
Texas Tech captured the women's division with a team time of 1:45:43.4 while University of Arkansas (1:47:47.50), Virginia Tech (1:48:12.60), UC Irvine (1:50:03.70), Oklahoma State (1:50:16.10) rounded off the top five.
The Broncs and Lady Broncs will be back in action when they host the National Independent Championships on Saturday (Oct. 27).
