Gonzalez Signs NIT with Men's Golf

May 2, 2008

With one year of collegiate experience under his belt, The University of Texas-Pan American men's golf team has signed A.J. Gonzalez (Edcouch, TX/ Edcouch-Elsa H.S.) to a national letter of intent with the Broncs for the upcoming 2008-09 academic campaign.

"A.J. has been a great asset to the men's team this year," said head men and women's coach Ofelia Lopez. "Coming in as a walk-on, A.J. wanted the chance to play and he put in alot hard work and dedication. We rewarded him and keep him part of the family. We are excited that A.J. has signed with us and we are looking forward to watching him grow as a golfer."

Gonzalez spent the spring season with the Broncs as a walk-on, where he competed in four tournaments, finishing tied for third with a 75.9 strokes average on the Broncs' squad.

Gonzalez's best finish came at the Jack Brown Memorial Tournament hosted by Texas A&M International where he collected a three-round score of 223 finishing tied for seventh overall.

During his prep career, Gonzalez was selected as the 2006-07 most valuable player at Edcouch-Elsa High School and was a 32-4A All-District selection all four years of his high school career.

Gonzalez was a two-time first team all-valley award winner and led his team to three district titles during his career as a Yellowjacket.

Gonzalez will compete in the Broncs season ending tournament, the National Minority Golf Championships in Port St. Lucie, FL on Friday (May 9).
