UTPA Golf Opens Spring Season

Feb. 3, 2008

The University of Texas men's and women's golf teams will travel to Laredo, TX, where they will compete in the Jack Brown Memorial Tournament on Monday (Feb. 1).

"The girls are coming off a good fall season," said head women's golf coach Ofelia Lopez. "We are staring the spring season and this tournament is a warm-up so we can get ready for the full schedule that's going to happen at the end of February through May."

The Lady Broncs are coming off one of their best finishes of the fall season, where they recorded a fifth place showing at the UAB Fall Beach Blast on November 6.

Mariale Camey collected a 79.3 strokes average playing in all four tournaments in the fall season with her best performance coming at the UNT Golf Classic where she earned 11th place.

The Lady Broncs will match-up against St. Mary's, Incarnate Word, Dallas Baptist, UT-Brownsville and host Texas A&M International.

The Broncs will also be traveling to Laredo for their first meet of the spring season and this will be the only meet until the National Minority Championship that both squads will compete in the same tournament.

"With the addition of Tim to the staff I think the men will do fine. I think they are playing good right now but they also need to stay in their mentally, get tough and hopefully they will start their season well," said Lopez.

The Broncs are coming off an eight place finish at the Bill-Hill Crown Classic on (October 9).

Shane Pearce finished the fall season with a 74.9 strokes average recording his best finish at the American Sky Golf Conference Championships where he tied for sixth place with a two-round tally of 145.

The Broncs will face-off against St. Mary's, Incarnate Word, Dallas Baptist, Texas A&M Commerce and host Texas A&M International.

The Broncs and Lady Broncs will tee off on Monday at 9 a.m. playing 36 holes on the first day and 18 holes on Tuesday at the Laredo Country Club.

"The girls have been off since the beginning of November so we're just looking for them to get the rust of their clubs and get them back out there to be competitive. The same goes for the guys, they've been off since the end of October, so hopefully they've worked hard over the break and there ready for this weekend," added Lopez.
