The University of Texas-Pan American men's golf team concluded the first round of action at The Nelson Invitational hosted by Stanford University in 16th place out of 16 teams on Friday (Oct. 22) in Palo Alto, CA.
The Broncs were led by freshman A.J. Hohn (Stockton, CA/Lodi H.S.), who finished as the top performer for UTPA at the end of the first round for the third consecutive tournament. Hohn ended his first day of action tied for 21st place after firing an 18-hole score of 71 (36-35).
After Hohn's solid play, the Broncs saw the majority of their players rank in the 70s with freshman Kyle Tudi (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral H.S.) leading the way at 76th with a score of 77. Teammates Colin Norris (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Cochrane H.S.) and Jeff Hensley (Van Horn, TX/Van Horn H.S.) each shot a 78 at the end of day one while freshman Alvaro Gonzalez (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) was 84th after shooting an 84.
University of New Mexico's Spencer Levin finished the round at four-under (65) to take a two-stroke lead over Ryan Moore of UNLV and Georgia State's Steve Tiley, who both shot 67. Georgia State finds itself ranked first at the end of day one with a team score of 275 while New Mexico (277), UNLV (279), Notre Dame (279) and Missouri (284) round out the top five.
The Nelson Invitational will continue on Saturday (Oct. 23) for the second round in Palo Alto, CA.
