"Password" was a popular game show back in the 1970s where celebrities would give contestants a single clue and hint in order to correctly guess the secret word.
After the first tournament of the season for the University of Texas-Pan American men's golf team, it wouldn't take contestants long to figure out the Broncs' secret password - "young"
With a lineup consisting of one junior, one sophomore and three freshmen, the Broncs finished ninth out of 12 teams at the Fairway Club Invitational in Lincoln, NE, on Tuesday (Sept. 14).
"I was more pleased today with our performance and how our guys were able to hold it together," said head coach Drew Scott. "It's important to remember that we are a young team and we are going to do better. We have a lot of time before our next tournament to correct the mistakes that we made and improve on our performance."
Freshman Kyle Tudi (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral H.S.) was the highest placing Bronc as he finished 36th in the tournament after shooting a 76 in the final round en route to firing a three-round total of 237. The Phoenix, AZ, native continued to improve in every round as he shot an 81 in the first round followed by an 80 in round two.
Sophomore Colin Norris (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Cochrane H.S.) tied for 40th as he shot a 240 (81-82-77), and finished his final round with a 77. Freshman A.J. Hohn (Stockton, CA/Lodi H.S.), who led the Broncs after two rounds, wrapped up his final 18-hole performance with an 84, shooting a three-round total of 244.
Junior Craig Berger (Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada/Wetaskiwin Composite H.S.) shot a 246 (80-85-81) and finished tied for 52nd while freshman Alvaro Gonzalez (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) concluded the tournament with a final score of 257 (92-83-82). The McAllen, TX, native ranked 61st overall.
Competing as an individual, freshman Jeff Hensley (Van Horn, TX/Van Horn H.S.) improved leaps and bounds over his first day of action, finishing with a final 18-hole score of 79. In his first two rounds, Hensley shot an 89 and 103 and wrapped up the Invitational in 64th place with a score of 271.
