Sept. 13, 2004
University of Texas - Pan American head men's golf coach Drew Scott pointed out before the season started that one of the biggest question marks surrounding the Broncs would be the youth of the squad and their ability to adjust to golf at the collegiate level.
All of those concerns were tossed out the window when freshmen A.J. Hohn (Stockton, CA/Lodi H.S.) and Kyle Tudi (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral H.S.) finished one-two for the Broncs in the first day of the Fairway Club Invitational hosted by the University of Nebraska on Monday (Sept. 13).
The Broncs finished the first day of action with a combined score of 646 (326-320) and are tied with Troy State University for eighth place. The University of Nebraska (308-299-607) leads the Invitational while Southern Mississippi (305-312-617), Wyoming (314-304-621), Drake (306-315-621) and Northern Illinois (312-310-622) round out the top five.
Hohn, who is tied for 31st, finished the first day of his collegiate career with a two-round score of 160 (84-76) and was the only Bronc to shoot in the 70s on an afternoon where the winds whipped around the golf course at 40 miles per hour. Tied for 35th, Tudi was one shot behind his teammate after wrapping up the day with a 161 (80-81).
"The conditions were extremely tough and very difficult for every team out there," said Scott. "You can't prepare for conditions like we had today, but I was pleased with the performance of the new guys. There were certain guys that I was counting on to come through, and A.J. and Kyle were two of those guys."
Sophomore Colin Norris (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Cochrane H.S.) was tied for 44th overall at the Invitational after finishing with a combined score of 163 (81-82), and junior Craig Berger (Westaskiwin, Alberta, Canada/Westaskiwin Composite H.S.) was 49th with a 165 (80-85). Freshman Alvaro Gonzalez (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) tied for 62nd with a two-round mark of 174 (92-84).
"We are a young team, and I hope that the guys learn from the mistakes that they made today and correct them before tomorrow's round," concluded Drew.
The final round of action will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 14).
