The University of Texas-Pan American men's golf team wrapped up the first two rounds in 12th place of the Matlock Collegiate Classic at the Grasslands Golf and Country Club in Lakeland, FL, on Monday (Feb. 14).
A pair of Broncs, Colin Norris (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Cochrane H.S.) and Kyle Tudi (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral H.S.), were tied for 39th place with identical scores of 155. Freshman Jeff Hensley (Van Horn, TX/Van Horn H.S.), who is tied for 59th, was five strokes back of his teammates finishing with a total score of 160 (80-80) after the first day of competition.
Freshman A.J. Hohn (Stockton, CA/Lodi H.S.) was tied for 61st overall after finishing the round at 161 (79-82) while junior Craig Berger (Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada/Wetaskiwin Composite H.S.) was tied for 67th, firing a two-round score of 163 (84-79).
"I didn't think that we played nearly as well as we could have today. The conditions were a little windy, but other teams will able to fire low scores. We are going to have our work cut out for us tomorrow," said head coach Drew Scott.
Matt VanCleave of Kansas State is currently the leader at the event as he fired a three-under 141 (70-71) while Georgia College and State's Carter Collins is only a stroke behind at 142 (71-71).
As a team, Georgia College and State holds a one-stroke advantage over Kansas State and Florida Southern with a team score of 588 while Missouri and Lynn round out the top five. UT - Pan American is currently in 12th place out of 15 teams, shooting a team score of 628 (312-316).
The final day of competition at the Matlock Collegiate Classic will conclude on Tuesday (Feb. 15) in Lakeland, FL.
