The University of Texas-Pan American men's golf team had a rough first day of the spring season at the Rice Intercollegiate as the Broncs currently possess 15th place after shooting a one-round score of 323 on Monday (Feb. 7).
The Broncs had a pair of freshmen tied at 58th in Kyle Tudi (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral H.S.) and Colin Norris (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Cochrane H.S.), who both shot identical 41-38 for a first round score of 79.
Craig Berger (Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada/Wetaskiwin Composite H.S.) fired an 80 (40-40) during the first 18 holes and was tied for 64th place while A.J. Hohn (Stockton, CA/Lodi H.S.) was tied for 81st with a score of 85 (42-43). Freshman Jeff Hensley (Van Horn, TX/Van Horn H.S.) was 87th with a score of 87 (44-43).
"I was a tough first day with the weather conditions," said head coach Drew Scott. "With that said, I was disappointed with the way that we played. I thought that we had a good three weeks of practice leading up to our opening tournament, and we are going to have to come back strong tomorrow. Hopefully, we can come out tomorrow, shoot some low scores and build some momentum leading to Florida Southern next weekend."
Sam Houston State held the first round lead with a final team score of 295 while The University of Nebraska is second only a single shot behind at 294. North Texas was the only other school to finish below 300 as a team with a 299 after the first round.
Due to poor weather conditions, the second round was cancelled. The Rice Intercollegiate will continue on Tuesday (Feb. 8) with the final 18 holes.
