Brian Burrell (Nacogdoches, TX/Paris J.C.) captured his second award in the last three weeks as the UTPA junior was selected as the Independent Newcomer of the Week, which was released on Wednesday (Dec. 6).
In the first week of awards, Burrell was selected as the Independent Player of the Week on November 21st, which made him the first UTPA player in 21 weeks to capture the award.
This past week, Burrell led the Broncs with a 16.0 scoring average to go along with 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game at the Iowa Hawkeye Classic. The UTPA junior nearly recorded his first career double-double with a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds to go along with four steals against the University of Iowa (Dec. 1).
The Broncs' shooting guard finished with a game-high 16 points in the final game of the Iowa Hawkeye Classic to go along with five rebounds, two steals and one assist in a 64-63 setback to LaSalle University.
The weekly Independent and Newcomer of the Week honors are voted on by Sports Information Directors at NCAA Division I Independent institutions.
