UTPA junior Brian Burrell (Nacogdoches, TX/Paris J.C.) was selected as the Independent Player of the Week, which was announced on Tuesday (Nov. 21), following his efforts this past week in a pair of Bronc victories over Huston-Tillotson and Texas State.
Burrell averaged 23.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.0 assists per game and connected on 10 three-pointers this past week en route to helping the Broncs remain undefeated with a 4-0 record.
The UTPA guard scored a career-high 31 points on 12-of-21 shooting, including six three-pointers, to go along with six rebounds in the Broncs' fourth straight victory over Texas State (Nov. 18) in 39 minutes of action. Burrell also finished with 16 points, including four three-pointers, in a 102-49 victory over Huston-Tillotson (Nov. 15).
Burrell became the first UTPA player to score 30 or more points in a game since Chris Fagan posted 30 points against Central Baptist on Feb. 19, 2005 - a span of 35 games. He also became the first player since Sergio Sanchez in December of 2004 to be voted the Independent Player of the Week - a span of 21 weeks.
For the season, Burrell is averaging a team-high 18.5 points per game, which ranks him fourth among all NCAA Division I Independent players in scoring average. He has scored 10 or more points in each of his first four games with the squad and has twice been selected as the AT&T Player of the Game this season.
The Player of the Week selections are voted on by Sports Information Directors at NCAA Division I Independent institutions.
