The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team announced that guard Matt Stilwell (Oviedo, FL/Seminole C.C.) has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Broncs for the 2008-09 academic campaign.
"Matt is one of the best three-point shooters in the country," said head men's basketball coach Tom Schuberth. "He has a quick release and unbelievable range. Matt played for a great high school program and improved his skills in junior college."
The newly-signed Bronc comes to the Rio Grande Valley from Seminole Community College where the sophomore led the Raiders to a 19-9 overall record including a 7-3 record in the Mid-Florida Conference and a second place finish.
Stilwell finished his sophomore campaign averaging 9.8 points, 1.7 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game. The newly-inked Bronc earned second team All-Mid-Florida Conference accolades and was a first team All-Academic Mid-Florida Conference award winner.
As a freshman, Stilwell averaged 18.9 points, 1.6 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game. The 6-2 guard was a first team All-Mid-Florida Conference selection, first team All-Academic Mid-Florida Conference recipient and was ranked in the top 150 of junior college players.
During his prep career at Oviedo High School, Stilwell averaged 16.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game en route to a 6A All-State Honorable Mention selection.
"Matt is a hard worker who continues to improve each season. He will fill the void with the graduation of our great three-point shooters, Paul Stoll, Brian Burrell, Dexter Shankle and Danny Puente," added Schuberth.
The newly-signed Bronc joins Reggie Cook (Lawton, OK/Cowley Community College) and Jason Jensen (Milwaukee, WI/St. Francis High School) as the newest members of the Valley's men's basketball team.
