Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville), Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.), Roly Gonzalez (Miami, FL/UNC-Greensboro) and Josh Wymer (Fort Worth, TX/Foster Ridge H.S.) garnered All-Tournament Team laurels for their efforts in the Citrus Tournament hosted by the University of Texas-Pan American at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium this past weekend.
Flores was named to the All-Tournament team for his performance over the weekend in which he compiled a .385 batting average, producing five hits which included two doubles and three RBI in his 13 at-bats. The UTPA catcher had his best game against McNeese State in which his double up the middle in the fifth inning produced two runs, proving to be the difference in the Bronc's 9-7 victory over the Cowboys.
Garcia had the hot bat for the Broncs during the three-day event where he racked up five hits in nine trips to the plate for a .556 batting average while scoring one run and driving in two Bronc base runners. Through the first two games of the tournament, Garcia produced four hits in six at-bats and one RBI in a 1-1 split with Illinois - Chicago and Cal State Northridge.
Newcomer Gonzalez was perhaps the Broncs most reliable player over the weekend, recording a .385 batting average while notching five hits in 13 at-bats. The speedy junior picked up four RBI and one two-base hit while crossing home plate five times for UTPA. Gonzalez enjoyed his best game of the tournament against McNeese State in which he recorded two hits in four trips to the plate from the lead-off spot in the lineup. He also notched three RBI while contributing three runs himself.
The Broncs had one pitcher named to the All-Tournament team in Wymer. The UTPA freshman finished the weekend 1-0 for his performance against Illinois - Chicago in which he pitched eight shutout innings. Wymer allowed just four hits during his time on the mound, fanning two batters and allowing just one base on balls. Batters recorded a mere .167 batting average against the UTPA newcomer over the weekend.
The Broncs will be back in action on Tuesday (Feb. 12) when they square-off against perennial power house Univesity of Texas in Austin, TX, with game time set for 2:05 p.m.
