Powered by a pair of home runs and five runs driven in by Trevor Crowe, the University of Arizona Wildcats pounded the UT - Pan American baseball team, 18-3, at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Friday (Feb. 18).
The Wildcats, who are ranked 10th in the nation, improved their overall record to 8-0 with the victory. The Broncs fell to 2-8 on the season and have dropped their last six games.
Crowe finished with three hits in five plate appearances while scoring a trio of runs in the game. Juniors Chris Frey and Brad Boyer each added three hits along with two RBI and two runs scored. Every hitter in the Wildcats lineup recorded at least one hit in the contest with six of them collecting two or more base knocks.
Sean Jarrett, who came in relief of Arizona ace John Meloan, picked up the win for the Wildcats as he hurled six scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out eight hitters. He upped his record to 1-0 on the season.
The Wildcats held a 20-8 advantage over UTPA in the hits' category with nine of them coming in the form of extra base knocks. Jordan Brown drilled his team-high fourth home run in the game in a five-run seventh inning for Arizona, and also connected on a double in the contest.
Offensively, the Broncs were led by junior Zach Gordon (Corpus Christ, TX/Midland College), who recorded a team-high two hits in the contest. UTPA received its lone runs in the third inning on an Arizona error as well as a J.R. Saenz (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) bases-loaded walk.
Sophomore Ryne Foster (Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park H.S.) suffered his second loss of the season for UTPA as he pitched 3.2 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits. He walked four hitters and struck out a pair. Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) came in relief of Foster and tossed 2.1 innings, giving up six runs on six hits.
Bryan Kervin collected three hits for the Wildcats while driving in four runs and scoring two, and Jeff Van Houten also collected three hits. Nick Hundley notched two hits.
The Broncs and Wildcats will square-off for game two of the three-game set on Saturday (Feb. 19) with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.
