Smolen appeared in 10 games on the mound during his rookie season with the Broncs... finished with a 6.94 earned run average in 36.1 innings pitched... struck out 16 batters while holding opponents to a .373 batting average... recorded his first strikeout against McNeese State (Feb. 11)... collected five strikeouts in seven innings versus The University of Texas at San Antonio... collected All-Tournament Team honors at the Al-Ogletree Classic.

Smolen was a first team all-district performer during his playing days at Lamar High School... was selected to the Ewell Jackson All-Tournament Team in his final campaign.
