Gene Salazar begins his first season as an assistant coach with The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program.
Salazar served as the interim head coach of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball program this past season where he served as the recruiting coordinator in his first three seasons and assisted in all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the Islander program.
Before joining the Islanders, the Texas native served as the head coach at St. Edward's University. Salazar had a 102-97 mark (.513 winning percentage) in four seasons as the head coach of the Hilltoppers baseball program in Austin.
Aside from his day-to-day coaching responsibilities with various programs, Salazar is a noted speaker and camp clinician having been invited to appear at clinics and camps across the country.
Salazar was a four-year letterman at St. Edward's under James Keller and completed his career in the top-five in 10 offensive categories, including second in career home runs, and first in total bases and hits. He earned All-Heartland Conference honors three times as well as being named the league's Freshman of the Year.
Prior entering the collegiate ranks, he served as head coach at Lockhart High School.
The first-year assistant coach earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from St. Edward's University. Salazar is married to Sylvia Salazar and has two children - Adrianna and Jacob.
